Wells Discount Liquors

Baltimore City Paper
September 21, 2011

Well, if Wells doesn’t float your beer boat and get you amped for drinking lagers and weizens from Ireland or locally made or brewed in Nevada, maybe you should just stick to whatever the hell it is that you drink, because you obviously don’t love beer the way we do. Wells offers shelves full of import singles from all over the world, rows of microbrewed six-packs, and celebratory bottles to share, and its constantly expanding stock means it takes beer as seriously as we do. And you don’t even have to crave seasonal flavors in brown-glass bottles or the latest in graphically interesting cans to appreciate the beer mecca that is Wells, because it also carries the best in blue-ribboned, Rocky Mountains, cold-filtered, all-American beer beer in cases, tallboys, and 40-ouncers.

Uruguay Comes to Wells!

Uruguay Comes to Wells!

(Posted by Dave Moore)

Tucked in between Argentina and Brazil on the Atlantic coast,   Uruguay’s history of wine making began with Spanish and Italian immigrants it the late 1800’s. Today excellent quality wines flourish in this region with a unique mountain and sea influenced vineyard region.

Just as Malbec has become identified with Argentina, Tannat is another old French grape that just seems to be better in the New World.  It has become the national grape of Uruguay. The Tannat wines produced here are characterized by more elegant and softer tannins and blackberry fruit notes that the harsher French style.

Wells now has several outstanding new wines in stock that showcase this little know wine region:

Dante’s 2008 Tannat Reserva $13.99:  With a balanced use of oak, this lively and focused wine is perfect with food. Enjoy the rich smoky, spicy and expansive Black Raspberry notes on the nose and palate.

Toscanini 2008 Tananat $11.99: With a perfumed nose of Violets and Red Raspberry, this no oak Tannat shows off the softer tannins and fruit driven Uruguayan style that makes this grape such an enticing find.

Dante’s 2009 Red Blend $11.99:  This unique blend of 50% Nebbiolo/50% Tannat makes a perfect every day red. Juicy, fruit forward and  soft on the finish, this it another great red you will only find in Uruguay.

Dante’s  2010 Viognier $13.99: Viognier has the weight and body of Chardonnay but with no oak and a rounded fruit component, it pairs with the same foods without overpowering. With this South American bottling, you will experience a fresh, intense and complex wine with flavors and aromas of wild flowers, apricots and lovely melon notes. A wine that with the mood of a bright summer day!

Estival 2009 White Blend $11.99: Another unique Uruguayan blend that has that wow factor, this wine is made of 60% Gewrztrammer, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Moscato Bianco. Dry but full bodied, Estival drinks beautifully by itself or paired with any white wine foods.

Chiappella 2009 Cabernet Franc Rose $11.99:  It’s color is light red cherry with fascinating scattered violet flashes. Very fruity and dry. In the nose, its distinctive fragrance of just collected mature berries transforms its classic cabernet franc bouquet into a complex, refreshing and sensual one. Lovely!

Alcyone Licor de Tannat $ 32.99: And now for dessert! Noting that it hailed from the same winery as the Estival, we chilled and tasted it — and were floored. Alcyone’s mesmerizing aroma, which called to mind marshmallow-topped hot chocolate, preceded a beguiling array of flavors including creamy cocoa and black-cherry confiture. This port-style fortified wine is another stunner from our new favorite country.

Heavy Seas Brewery Visit

Posted by JASON

Even with a great wine store like Wells, Baltimore seems to me to be a beer town. And Heavy Seas Brewery is one of the reasons Baltimore’s beer culture is alive and well. I recently had the great pleasure of meeting Heavy Seas Marketing Director Kelly Zimmerman. Kelly conducted a private tour  for myself and  a few beer loving friends. (Being in the liquor industry does have it’s perks but public tours are available!)

Heavy Seas (formerly Clipper City Brewing) has a homey and inviting tasting bar in their Hollins Ferry road facility and Kelly pours like a professional. In fact, Kelly’s knowledge, personality and sense of humor would make any beer taste better. However, the consistent quality and creativity in the Heavy Seas portfolio is an easy sell.

Kelly poured a great selection starting with Gold Ale from their Clipper Fleet. This a classic style, crisp, and easy to sip showing a hoppy, floral note  with true elegance. Thank you mam, may I have another?

Next up was the Marzen (formerly Marzen Hon) and at 5.75 ABV, this beer will get your attention. Malty, toasty and with a hint of sweet, this tastes fat in the mouth and smooth on the finish. It is no wonder the full bodied beer has won awards at the Great American Beerfest.

Moving to the Pyrate Fleet beers, we sampled Small Craft Warning, a bottle conditioned “Uber Pils.” Rich, smooth and full bodied, this is a big beer but also would be great paired with any meal that you might serve with white wine. Along with Loose Cannon, this is available year round and is one of Heavy Seas most popular brews. Now I know why!

While I’ve tasted and enjoyed all of these beers in the past, I tried several new to me and I now have a new favorite. Kelly served the  Peg Leg Imperial Stout at the perfect chilled temperature. Rich, creamy and lip smacking, I  wholeheartedly agree with their website notes: “Deep mahogany in color with aromas of roasted coffee, molasses and dark chocolate. Subtly hopped, making it astonishingly smooth and easy drinking for such a big beer.”

The  Mutiny Fleet beers are all above 8%ABV and are unusual  in style. The Below Decks Barley Wine are vintage dated and some are aged in bourbon or wine barrels. These are the kind of beers that put hair on your chest and come in the bomber size 750ml bottles. Kelly let us taste and compare a 2008 bourbon barrel against a 2009. I was impressed at how the beer changes and gains complexity, much like a fine wine. The 2008 even showed some sherry-like notes. These bottles are definitely worth putting in your wine rack!

Kelly shepherded our little group on a informative and interesting tour of the brewing and bottling warehouse. We smelled and were given buds of  fresh hops and shown the ingredient storage areas. The building is about to be expanded (”we’re busting through that wall,” Kelly said) and every space is well used. After seeing the brew vats, aging barrels and bottling line, we returned to the tasting bar for one more sip. Kelly came back from the cold storage area with a fresh pitcher of Heavy Seas’ Pumpkin Beer which had not yet been bottled. This was another treat with light spice, just the right amount of refreshing pumpkin and a great finish. Happy Halloween and three cheers to Kelly!

On our way out after receiving a few gifts (and buying a few items from their store) we shook hands with Hugh Sisson himself. Hugh is the founder and managing partner of Heavy Seas and is well known for his Cellar Notes segment on NPR each week. We thanked him for the behind the scenes look and praised him for the excellent beverages. He thanked us for being  beer sellers and customers.

Three cheers for Baltimore Beers! (Heavy Seas is on the web @ http://www.hsbeer.com/)
