2009 BORDEAUX FUTURES - ROUND 1

Posted by Trisha

Let the 2009 Bordeaux futures campaign begin! Will it be the best vintage ever? That is definitely the hype to this point, and so far the ratings are backing up the acclamations. Of course only time will tell the whole story of this heralded vintage, but until then we can only do our homework and search for those wines that offer great value and superb drinking.High prices are definitely an issue with the 2009 futures, but we have been diligently doing our homework and found some great values that we feel offer our customers the best quality to dollar value, while also maintaining the high ratings of some of the top critics in the wine world. In particular, we feel the Sansonnet St. Emilion fills that quota perfectly as, stated by The Wine Advocate, “It is an amazing effort, but because of the minuscule yields, little will be available in the marketplace.”

As a side note, if there are any wines you are interested in purchasing as 2009 Bordeaux futures, particularly Classified Growths and top level Right Bank wines, please let us know specifically which wines they are and we will gladly provide pricing on those wines.

Ch. Croix Mouton Bordeaux Superieur
$13.50 btl - $80 6btls - $155 case

“One couldn’t ask for a more serious owner than Jean-Philippe Janoueix, who has done such a terrific job at La Confession in St.-Emilion and La Croix St.-Georges in Pomerol. Tiny yields of 31 hectoliters per hectare as well as super attention to detail in both the vineyard and winemaking has resulted in a wine that is a final blend of 87% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot coming in at 14.1% alcohol. The wine is stunning, dense purple in color, with notes of chocolate, espresso roast, pain grille, blackberries, and cherries. It is a hedonistic mouthful of wine to drink over the next 4-5 years. (Tasted two times.)” - Wine Advocate 89-91 pts.

Feret-Lambert Bordeaux Superieur
$13.50 btl - $80 6btls - $155 case

“Wow! What a big time sleeper of the vintage. This delicious, full-bodied wine behaves more like a classified growth than a generic Bordeaux Superieur. It possesses a dense purple color as well as notes of black raspberries, licorice, graphite, and cassis, wonderful intensity, purity, richness, and overall balance, and a stunning finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. (Tasted once.)” -Wine Advocate 89-91pts.

D’Aiguilhe Querre Cotes de Castillon
$14.50 btl - $85 6btls - $165 case

“This sleeper of the vintage was cropped at 34 hectoliters per hectare, and the result is a concentrated, viscous wine revealing beautiful mulberry and black currant fruit intertwined with hints of earth and spring flowers. Terrific density and opulence as well as a tremendous finish suggest it will drink well young, yet last for 15+ years.” -Wine Advocate 88-90pts.

Siaurac Lalande de Pomerol
$17.50 btl - $105 6btls - $205 case

“A sleeper of the vintage, this is the best wine I have ever tasted from this property. A dense purple color is followed by abundant meaty, black currant, black cherry, licorice, underbrush, and forest floor characteristics. Full-bodied, powerful, rich, and silky-textured, it will provide plenty of pleasure over the next decade. (Tasted once.)” -Wine Advocate 89-91pts.

Lanessan Haut Medocl
$17.50 btl - $105 6btls - $205 case

“Generally a St.-Julien/Pauillac-like offering, the 2009 Lanessan seems more explosive and concentrated than prior vintages. I’m not sure it is the finest I have ever tasted, but it boasts a dense purple color as well as copious creme de cassis, cedar wood, underbrush, and spice notes. Beautiful opulence, silky tannins, and a long finish suggest this sleeper of the vintage will drink well for 2-3 decades. (Tasted once.)” -Wine Advocate 90-92pts

Ch. Lilian Ladouys St. Estephe
$20.50 btl - $120 6btls - $235 case

“Dark color, with a spiced nose of cloves and cardamom. Tar too. Full-bodied, with round and velvety tannins and a rich, fruity aftertaste. Gorgeous young wine.” -Wine Spectator 92-95pts

Ch. Sansonnet St. Emilion
$25.50 btl - $150 6btls - $295 case

I have never cared for previous vintages of Sansonnet, but I enjoyed the 2009 on several occasions. St.-Emilion’s significant hail damage in May, 2009, led to Sansonnet’s incredibly low yields of 9 hectoliters per hectare. The dense purple-colored 2009 reveals copious aromas of sweet, chalky, blackberry and black cherry fruit, medium to full body, deep, concentrated flavors, and sweet tannin. It is an amazing effort, but because of the minuscule yields, little will be available in the marketplace.” -Wine Advocate 90-92+pts

Ch. Haut Bergey Pessac-Leognan
$32.00 btl - $190 6btls - $375 case

“The earthy, smoky notes intermixed with notions of black fruits and road tar found in this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot are classic Graves traits. Sweet, dense fruit, with tremendous opulence, a layered mouthfeel, and excellent purity, freshness, and ripe tannins are displayed in abundance in this beautifully made offering from proprietor Helene Garcin. It should age effortlessly for 20 years.” -Wine Advocate 92-94pts.
